Since May 2026, Salesforce includes a free Slack workspace with every new org, and existing customers can connect Slack from setup. In our Chatter guide, you collaborated inside Salesforce. In our custom notifications guide, you sent alerts to users. Slack brings that collaboration and those alerts into the tool many teams already use for chat.

In this post, you will learn how the connection works, what the main Salesforce apps for Slack do, how flows send Slack messages, and how to keep data access safe. Then you will plan a Slack setup for the Bright Path Tutors sales and support teams. Product names and menus in this area change often, so follow the current Help steps when a label looks different.

What is Salesforce and Slack Integration?

Slack is a messaging platform with channels, direct messages and apps. Salesforce connects to Slack through Salesforce-built apps and through flow actions. After an admin connects the two, users link their own Salesforce accounts in Slack.

Then users can look up records, share them in channels, get pipeline updates, work cases together and approve requests from Slack. This means fewer tabs and fewer copied details. Every action still follows each user’s Salesforce permissions.

Here is a simple analogy. Think of a school staff room. Teachers chat there all day, but the student files sit in the office down the hall. Connecting Salesforce and Slack is like bringing a window from the office into the staff room. Teachers can see and update the files they are allowed to, without leaving the conversation.

Why Salesforce and Slack Matter

Teams spend much of their day in chat. When Salesforce data lives in another tab, people copy and paste details, and updates get lost. For example, a rep agrees a discount in a Slack thread, but the opportunity still shows the old amount a week later. As a result, forecasts and dashboards drift away from what the team actually knows.

Here are some real situations at Bright Path Tutors.

Sales reps discuss school deals in Slack but update Salesforce later, or never.

Support agents need help from the academic team on hard cases.

Managers want a Slack message when a big deal closes.

The CEO wants approvals on discounts without logging in to Salesforce.

So connecting the two keeps conversations and records in step.

How Salesforce and Slack Work Together

The setup follows a clear order. First, an admin connects the Salesforce org to a Slack workspace, either the free workspace for new orgs or an existing one. Next, the admin installs and configures the Salesforce apps for Slack, such as the sales and service apps. Then users connect their Slack accounts to their Salesforce users. After that, flows and apps send messages, record previews and alerts into Slack. Finally, users work with records from Slack, and every action respects their Salesforce access.

How the two tools work together: connect the org and workspace, install apps, users link accounts, then alerts and record actions flow into Slack.

Because users link their own accounts, a rep never sees a record in Slack that they cannot see in Salesforce.

Key Parts of Salesforce and Slack

Connecting Salesforce and Slack

First, the connection links one Salesforce org to a Slack workspace. New orgs get a free workspace already linked. Existing orgs connect from setup with help from a Slack admin.

Sales Cloud for Slack

Next, Sales Cloud for Slack lets reps view and update records, check their pipeline, get reminders and work in deal channels. For example, a rep can update an opportunity stage from a Slack message.

Service Cloud for Slack

Then Service Cloud for Slack helps agents swarm on cases. A swarm is a Slack channel where several experts help solve one hard case, with the case details pinned. So an agent stuck on a certificate problem can pull in the academic head and finance in minutes, instead of sending three separate emails.

Flow actions for Slack

Flows can send Slack messages, create channels and add people, using Slack actions in Flow Builder. So the “Big Deal Won” alert from our notifications post can also go to a sales channel. Likewise, a flow can create a deal channel for every school opportunity over 10 lakh and add the owner, the manager and the solution expert automatically.

Security and data access

Finally, each user’s Salesforce permissions still apply. Messages posted in channels, however, can be seen by everyone in that channel, so choose carefully what flows post.

The table below shows our planned Slack setup.

Slack item

Purpose at Bright Path Tutors

#sales-wins channel

Flow posts deals over 5 lakh

Deal channels

One channel per large school deal

Case swarms

Support and academic experts solve hard cases

Approvals in Slack

Managers approve discounts from messages

Personal alerts

Reps get reminders about closing deals

Salesforce and Slack vs Chatter

Both tools support team conversations, so beginners ask which to use. The table below compares them.

Feature

Slack

Chatter

Where it lives

Separate app with Salesforce connection

Inside Salesforce

Talks with other tools

Many apps and integrations

Mainly Salesforce

Real-time chat

Yes, channels and messages

Feeds and comments

Record context

Through Salesforce apps and previews

Directly on record feeds

Best for

Company-wide chat and cross-team work

Record-level comments inside Salesforce

In short, keep Chatter for quick comments on a record. You need admin access to both tools.

Step 1: Connect the org and workspace

In Salesforce Setup, search for Slack and open the Slack setup page.

Follow the guided steps to connect your Slack workspace, or confirm the free workspace that came with a new org.

Step 2: Turn on the sales app

In Setup, open the Sales Cloud for Slack settings and turn on the features you need, like record views and alerts.

Ask the Slack admin to install the app in the workspace, then share it with the sales team.

Step 3: Send a flow message

Open the “Big Deal Won” flow from our custom notifications post.

Add a Slack action that sends a message to #sales-wins with the deal name and amount.

Save and activate the new version.

Step 4: Test

Close a test opportunity over 5 lakh. The bell notification appears in Salesforce, and a message appears in #sales-wins. Then click the record link in Slack to open the deal. If your user is not linked yet, Slack asks you to connect your Salesforce account first, which is a good check that the user setup works.

Step 5: Check which deals posted

Developers can list the deals that should have posted today with this query.

SELECT Name, Amount, Owner.Name, CloseDate
FROM Opportunity
WHERE IsWon = true AND Amount > 500000 AND CloseDate = TODAY

Compare the result with the messages in #sales-wins. If a deal is missing, check the flow’s entry conditions and the Slack connection status. Also check the flow’s error emails, because a failed Slack action shows up there.

Common Mistakes with Salesforce and Slack

Posting sensitive data in public channels. Everyone in the channel can read it.

Too many automated messages. Noisy channels get muted.

Skipping user account links. Users cannot act on records until they connect accounts.

No Slack admin involved. App installs often need Slack admin approval.

Forgetting Chatter users. Plan which team uses which tool.

Best Practices for Salesforce and Slack

Start with one team. Sales wins or case swarms make a clear first use case for everyone.

Use private channels for sensitive topics. Limit who sees fee or contract details.

Keep messages short. Include a record link for details, so people open Salesforce only when they need more.

Review channel noise monthly. Remove alerts nobody acts on.

Document the setup. Note which flows post to which channels.

Practice Task

Create a case swarm channel for a High priority case using Service Cloud for Slack, and invite one academic expert. Then close the case and archive the channel.

Hint: check that the expert has access to the case in Salesforce before inviting them.

Salesforce and Slack FAQ

Is Slack free with Salesforce?

New Salesforce orgs include a free Slack workspace. Paid Slack plans add more features.

Can Slack users without Salesforce see records?

They only see what is posted in the channel. Record actions need a linked Salesforce user.

Does Slack replace Chatter?

No. Both can run side by side, and teams choose based on their work.

Official Resources

Sales Cloud for Slack (Salesforce Help)

Slack for Every Salesforce Customer (Salesforce)

Quick Recap

Salesforce and Slack connect records, alerts and approvals to team chat.

New orgs include a free Slack workspace from May 2026.

Sales and service apps for Slack bring records into conversations.

Flows can post messages and create channels in Slack.

User permissions still apply, but channel posts are visible to members.

What’s Next?

Your teams now work with Salesforce data in Slack.
