Instead of long email threads, the conversation lives on the course, the account or the case itself. In our <a href=\"https:\/\/swapnilzambare.com\/blog\/salesforce-activities-tasks-events-email\/\">activities guide<\/a>, you tracked work with customers. Chatter covers the other side: how your own team talks about that work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this post, you will learn how Chatter feeds, posts, @mentions and groups work, how feed tracking shows field changes automatically, and how Salesforce Files and Notes fit in. Then you will set up a Trainers group, track course changes in the feed and share a course outline file at Bright Path Tutors. Good collaboration keeps knowledge in Salesforce, not in personal inboxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Salesforce Chatter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chatter is a social feed inside Salesforce, a bit like a company version of a social media timeline. Users can post messages, share files, run polls and mention colleagues with the @ symbol. Each record can have its own feed, so conversations stay attached to the right course or customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Salesforce Files is the place where documents live, such as PDFs, images and spreadsheets. Files can be attached to records, shared in Chatter and organised into libraries. Notes let users write rich-text notes linked to records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is a simple analogy. Think of a school notice board placed outside each classroom. Teachers pin updates, students ask questions and everyone sees the history in one place. Chatter puts that notice board on every important record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Chatter and Files Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Email threads hide knowledge, because only the people on the thread can see them. When a counsellor leaves, their emails about a key parent leave with them. Chatter keeps those conversations on the record, so the next person sees the full story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some real situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A trainer asks the finance team why a course fee changed, right on the course record.<\/li>\n\n<li>Also, a manager posts the new weekend batch timings to all trainers at once.<\/li>\n\n<li>Then a counsellor attaches a signed admission form to the parent&#8217;s contact record.<\/li>\n\n<li>Admins want everyone following a course to see when its start date changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, Chatter works in the Salesforce mobile app. So trainers can answer questions between classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Salesforce Chatter Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every user has a personal feed that shows posts from people, records and groups they follow. Every record with feed tracking turned on has a record feed. This is different from field history, which we covered in our <a href=\"https:\/\/swapnilzambare.com\/blog\/salesforce-field-history-tracking-audit-trail\/\">field history guide<\/a>, because feed tracking is social and visible in the feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Parts of Salesforce Chatter and Files<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Posts, comments and @mentions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, a post is a message in a feed. Others can comment, like or share it. Typing @ and a name mentions a user or group, and they get a notification. Mentions are the fastest way to pull someone into a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Following records and people<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, users can follow records, like a key course, and people, like their manager. Updates from everything they follow appear in their own feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chatter groups<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, a group is a space for a team or topic. Groups come in three kinds, and unlisted groups suit sensitive projects, such as planning a new branch. Libraries hold official documents, like brochures and price lists, with controlled access. For example, a course brochure in a library always shows the latest version, even after marketing updates it. Users can also create public links to share a file outside Salesforce, if admins allow it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Notes are rich-text notes that users can link to several records. So one meeting note can sit on the course, the parent and the account at the same time. They replace the older plain notes and are better for meeting notes or call summaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chatter vs Email for Team Collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many teams start with email, so it helps to compare the two. Chatter is on by default in most orgs, including Developer Edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Turn on feed tracking for Course<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to Setup, type &#8220;Feed Tracking&#8221; in Quick Find, and open it.<\/li>\n\n<li>Select Course from the object list and tick Enable Feed Tracking.<\/li>\n\n<li>Tick the fields Fee, Start Date and Level, then click Save.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Create a Trainers group<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the App Launcher and search for Groups. This query shows recent posts on courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>SELECT Body, CreatedBy.Name, CreatedDate\nFROM FeedItem\nWHERE Type = 'TextPost'\nORDER BY CreatedDate DESC\nLIMIT 10<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This query lists files with their type and size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>SELECT Title, FileType, ContentSize, CreatedDate\nFROM ContentDocument\nORDER BY CreatedDate DESC<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ContentSize is in bytes. So a value of 245760 means a file of about 240 KB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Mistakes with Salesforce Chatter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tracking too many fields.<\/strong> Feeds fill with noise and people stop reading. Track only important fields.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Using public groups for sensitive topics.<\/strong> Public groups are visible to all users. Use private groups for finance or HR topics.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Sharing files with public links by mistake.<\/strong> Anyone with the link can open the file. Check sharing before you send links outside.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Leaving Chatter unused.<\/strong> A tool nobody uses adds no value. Agree simple rules, like &#8220;questions about a course go on its feed&#8221;, and share them in a welcome post.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Mixing customer email into Chatter.<\/strong> Customers do not see internal Chatter, so reply to them by email.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best Practices for Salesforce Chatter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Post on the record, not in a general group.<\/strong> Context stays with the data that matters.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Use @mentions instead of long distribution lists.<\/strong> Only the right people get notified.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Create a group per team or project.<\/strong> Groups keep updates focused.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Keep official documents in libraries.<\/strong> Everyone finds the latest version in one place.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Turn on the Salesforce mobile app notifications.<\/strong> People respond faster when they get alerts on their phone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practice Task<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create a Chatter poll in the Trainers group asking &#8220;Which day suits the monthly trainer meeting?&#8221; with three options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hint: in the group&#8217;s publisher, look for the Poll option next to Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Salesforce Chatter FAQ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can customers see Salesforce Chatter posts?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not by default.
