Fields, sections, buttons and related lists all come from the layout. In our validation rules guide, you made sure the data going in is clean. Now you will make that data easy to read and easy to edit.

In this post, you will learn what page layouts control, how Lightning record pages add a second layer on top, and how Dynamic Forms let you show fields only when they matter. Then you will redesign the Course record page step by step. A clean page saves every user a few seconds on every record, and that adds up fast.

What are Salesforce Page Layouts?

A page layout is a template that controls the details area of a record. It decides which fields appear, in what order, inside which sections. It also controls related lists, buttons and quick actions.

A Lightning record page is the full screen around that detail area. You build it in Lightning App Builder by dragging components, such as tabs, the activity timeline or a report chart, onto the page.

Here is a simple way to picture it. Think of a newspaper page. The page layout is the main article: the text, the headings and the order of paragraphs. The Lightning record page is the whole newspaper page, including the side columns, photos and adverts around the article.

Why Page Layouts Matter

A crowded page slows people down. If a sales rep has to scroll past 60 fields to find a phone number, they will stop updating records. On the other hand, a clean page with the right fields at the top makes good data entry feel easy.

Here are some real situations where layouts help.

Sales reps need the Fee and Start Date at the top of every Course.

Support agents should not see the internal Notes section at all.

Online courses need extra fields, like a meeting link, that classroom courses do not.

Managers want a quick report chart right on the record page.

Each of these needs a slightly different page. So let’s see how Salesforce builds the page you see.

How Salesforce Page Layouts and Lightning Pages Work Together

When a user opens a record, Salesforce picks two things. First, it picks the Lightning record page based on the app, record type and profile. Then, inside that page, the Record Detail component shows the fields from the page layout assigned to that user.

How Salesforce Page Layouts and Lightning record pages work together when a user opens a record.

This means you often change two things for one screen. For example, field order lives on the page layout, while tabs and charts live on the Lightning record page. Once you know which tool owns which part, changes become simple.

What You Can Control on Each Layer

The table below shows which tool controls which part of the screen.

Part of the screen

Controlled by

Example

Fields and sections

Page layout or Dynamic Forms

A Pricing section with Fee

Field required or read-only on screen

Page layout or Dynamic Forms

Start Date required on screen

Related lists

Page layout or Related List component

A list of Enrollments

Buttons and quick actions

Page layout

Submit for Approval button

Tabs, charts and other components

Lightning record page

A Details tab and a Chart tab

Highlights panel at the top

Compact layout

Name, Fee and Level

Page layout assignment

You assign page layouts by profile and record type, the same profiles you met in our profiles and permission sets guide. For example, the Sales Rep profile can get “Course Layout – Sales”, while support agents get “Course Layout – Support”. You set this on the Page Layout Assignment screen.

Lightning record page activation

You activate a Lightning record page in one of three ways. It can be the org default, the default for one app, or a page for a specific app, record type and profile together. The most specific match wins.

Compact layouts

A compact layout picks the key fields shown in the highlights panel at the top of the record. It also controls what users see first in the Salesforce mobile app. So keep it short, with only the most useful fields.

Dynamic Forms

Dynamic Forms move fields out of the page layout and onto the Lightning record page itself. Then you can add visibility rules to each field or section. For example, you can show an “Online Details” section only when Is Online is ticked.

Salesforce Page Layouts vs Lightning Record Pages

Both tools shape what users see, so beginners often mix them up. The table below compares them.

Feature

Page layout

Lightning record page

Where you edit it

Object Manager, Page Layouts

Lightning App Builder

Main job

Fields, sections, related lists, buttons

Overall page structure and components

Assigned by

Profile and record type

App, record type and profile

Show fields based on conditions

No

Yes, with Dynamic Forms

Add charts, tabs and rich text

No

Yes

In short, use the page layout for buttons and basic field order. Use the Lightning record page for structure, components and conditional fields.

Salesforce Page Layouts compared with Lightning record pages, with the main job of each one.

Hands-on Example: Redesign Salesforce Page Layouts for Courses

Let’s improve the Course page at Bright Path Tutors. We will add a Pricing section to the layout, then build a Lightning record page with a conditional Online Details section.

Step 1: Add a Pricing section to the page layout

Go to Setup, then Object Manager, then Course, then Page Layouts.

Click Course Layout to open the layout editor.

In the palette at the top, drag a Section onto the page. Name it “Pricing” and click OK.

Drag Fee, Fee with GST and Beginner Price into the new section.

Click the wrench icon next to Start Date, tick Required, and click OK. Then click Save.

Step 2: Open the Lightning record page

Open any Course record from the Courses tab.

Click the gear icon and choose Edit Page. Lightning App Builder opens.

Click the Record Detail component in the middle of the canvas.

In the right panel, click Upgrade Now to switch this page to Dynamic Forms. Follow the short wizard and pick Course Layout.

Step 3: Add a conditional section

From the Fields tab on the left, drag a Field Section onto the page. Set its label to “Online Details”.

Drag the Is Online and Start Date fields into it.

With the section selected, click Add Filter under Set Component Visibility.

Set the filter as shown in the table below, then click Done.

Setting

Value

Filter Type

Record Field

Field

Is Online

Operator

Equal

Value

True

Step 4: Save and activate

Click Save. When asked, click Activate, choose Org Default, and click Save again. Now open an online course and a classroom course side by side. Only the online one shows the Online Details section.

Common Mistakes with Salesforce Page Layouts

Editing the wrong layout. Many objects have several layouts. Check Page Layout Assignment first to see which one your users actually get.

Using layouts as security. Removing a field from a layout only hides it on that screen. Users can still see it in reports or list views, so use field-level security for real protection.

Adding every field. A layout with 80 fields helps nobody. Keep only what users need, and group the rest in a collapsed section.

Forgetting to activate. A saved Lightning record page does nothing until you activate it.

Duplicating fields. With Dynamic Forms, a field placed twice confuses users when they edit it.

Best Practices for Salesforce Page Layouts

Put the most used fields at the top. People read from top to bottom, so the first section should answer their main question.

Use clear section names. Names like Pricing or Online Details guide the eye better than “Information”.

Talk to real users. Ask two or three people what they look for first. Their answers often surprise admins.

Prefer Dynamic Forms for new pages. Visibility rules reduce the number of layouts you need to maintain.

Keep compact layouts short. The highlights panel works best with only a handful of key fields.

Practice Task

Create a second page layout called “Course Layout – Support” without the Pricing section. Assign it to the Standard User profile.

Hint: use the Page Layout Assignment button on the Page Layouts screen.

Salesforce Page Layouts FAQ

How many page layouts should an object have?

As few as possible. Each extra layout is one more thing to update when you add a field. So start with one layout and add more only when a group of users truly needs a different view.

Do Salesforce Page Layouts still matter with Dynamic Forms?

Yes. Even with Dynamic Forms, the page layout still controls buttons, quick actions and some related lists. Also, the mobile app and some older screens still read from the layout.

Why can a user not see a field I added to the layout?

Usually it is field-level security. First, check the user’s profile and permission sets for read access to that field. Then check that they are using the layout you edited.

Official Resources

Lightning Experience Customization (Trailhead)

Lightning App Builder module (Trailhead)

Page Layouts (Salesforce Help)

Quick Recap

Salesforce Page Layouts control fields, sections, related lists and buttons on a record.

Lightning record pages control the full screen and its components.

Assign layouts by profile and record type; activate Lightning pages by app, record type and profile.

Dynamic Forms let you show fields and sections only when a condition is true.

Layouts are not security.
